Heterogeneous Multiscale FEM for Diffusion Problems on Rough Surfaces

چکیده
We present a finite element method for the numerical solution of diffusion problems on rough surfaces. The problem is transformed to an elliptic homogenization problem in a two dimensional parameter domain with a rapidly oscillating diffusion tensor and source term. The finite element method is based on the heterogeneous multiscale methods of E and Engquist [Commun. Math. Sci., 1 (2003), pp. 87–132]. For periodic surface roughness of scale ε and amplitude O(ε), the method converges at a robust rate, i.e., independent of ε, to the homogenized solution.

Multiscale Finite Element Methods for Flows on Rough Surfaces
In this paper, we present the Multiscale Finite Element Method (MsFEM) for problems on rough heterogeneous surfaces. We consider the diffusion equation on oscillatory surfaces. Our objective is to represent small-scale features of the solution via multiscale basis functions described on a coarse grid. This problem arises in many applications where processes occur on surfaces or thin layers. We ...
متن کاملA Discontinuous Galerkin Multiscale Method for Convection-diffusion Problems
We propose an extension of the discontinuous Galerkin local orthogonal decomposition multiscale method, presented in [14], to convection-diffusion problems with rough, heterogeneous, and highly varying coefficients. The properties of the multiscale method and the discontinuous Galerkin method allows us to better cope with multiscale features as well as interior/boundary layers in the solution. ...
متن کاملMultiscale mass conservative domain decomposition preconditioners for elliptic problems on irregular grids
Multiscale methods can in many cases be viewed as special types of domain decomposition preconditioners. The localisation approximations introduced within the multiscale framework are dependent upon both the heterogeneity of the reservoir and the structure of the computational grid. While previous works on multiscale control volume methods have focused on heterogeneous elliptic problems on regu...
متن کاملFinite Element Heterogeneous Multiscale Methods with Near Optimal Computational Complexity
This paper is concerned with a numerical method for multiscale elliptic problems. Using the framework of the Heterogeneous Multiscale Methods (HMM), we propose a micro-macro approache which combines finite element method (FEM) for the macroscopic solver and the pseudospectral method for the micro solver. Unlike the micro-macro methods based on standard FEM proposed so far in HMM we obtain, for ...
متن کاملFully discrete analysis of the heterogeneous multiscale method for elliptic problems with multiple scales
A fully discrete analysis of the finite element heterogeneous multiscale method (FEHMM) for elliptic problems with N + 1 well separated scales is discussed. The FEHMM is a numerical homogenization method that relies on macroscopic scheme (macro FEM) for the approximation of the effective solution corresponding to the multiscale problem. The effective data are recovered from micro scale computat...
